The SCHS offers an intensive hands-on internship program to college students to gain practical experience in a local history museum. Interns must be either undergraduate or graduate students with some background or interest in history, museum studies and/or education. Applicants should be enthusiastic and creative, and have strong written and oral communication skills. Interning at SCHS will give students a great introduction to the field of local history and non-profit work, and it will help build contacts and personal interests.

Internships are unpaid; the hours are flexible. SCHS has experience working with students who wish to receive school credit for their internship experience. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange for credit with their school/professor.

Summer Internships: Each year the SCHS seeks summer interns in exhibit development, education and communications to assist in a number of museum projects.  These unpaid internships run approximately 12 weeks (May-August), with flexible hours.

Duties include creating and installing two off-site exhibits, assisting with the completion of the Native American gallery, and conducting research for the upcoming mapping exhibit.

Duties include cataloguing portions of the collection, assisting with rehousing portions of the collection, and completing a rolling inventory of portions of the collection.

The Education Intern is responsible for delivering Scott County Historical Society programs to the public, preparing program materials and spaces, and conducting research and evaluation. The Education Intern reports to the Curator of Education.

Intern is responsible for researching and drafting a marketing plan for the Scott County    Historical Society, including preparing target marketing materials and drafting a strategic action plan. The communications intern reports to the Executive Director.

School-Year and January-Term Internships: Internships are available. Contact SCHS to discuss opportunities.
